End the Year with Clarity – Breaking Down Some Frequently Used Advertising Acronyms
Have you ever sat in a meeting and felt like you were listening to another language? Were you too uncomfortable to stop the meeting and ask for the meaning of something? We've all been there, guilty at some point or another of using acronyms. While among peers of your company or industry, acronyms may facilitate conversation, they can cause communication issues when everyone in the room isn't speaking the same "language."
The advertising industry has a plethora of acronyms, so BMG thought it would be nice to provide some short definitions for a few frequently used ones in our industry.
-
- CPM – Cost Per Thousand: The cost an advertiser pays for every 1,000 impressions their ad receives.
- GRP – Gross Rating Point: A metric in traditional ad buying. It is used to measure the impact of a campaign by quantifying impressions as a percentage of a target audience multiplied by the frequency in which that audience sees the ad.
- KPI – Key Performance Indicator: A quantifiable measure of performance over time for a specific objective. These are usually identified and set at the beginning of a campaign and used to measure success.
- SEO – Search Engine Optimization: The optimization of your website for getting ranked in search engine result pages.
- SEM - Search Engine Marketing: A marketing strategy used to help companies rank higher among search engine traffic. The goal is to increase visibility in search engines like Google or Bing and drive traffic to your website.
- OTT – Over-The-Top: This refers to content delivery. It is used when speaking about watching video content accessed via the internet instead of traditional cable, satellite, or broadcast. This includes viewing on all devices such as connected TV, laptop, mobile, and tablet. Examples are Hulu, Netflix, Peacock, HBO Now, and SlingTV.
- CTV – Connected TV: This refers to a type of physical device. It is used to refer to Smart TVs or other TV sets that are connected to the internet. This does not include mobile devices, tablets, or computers. This can be when the TV is connected to a device such as a Roku Device, Amazon Firestick, AppleTV, or Playstation to enable internet access or a SmartTV that has built-in internet access.
- EOD – End of December – just kidding! For any TikTok viewers, you may have seen the clip, but for those who haven't, here is the link. (A great example of why acronyms may make for funny situations but not the best communication.)
